About Mount Rishiri

Mount Rishiri is a 1,721 m mountain near the boundary of Rishirifuji Town and Rishiri Town, Hokkaido. It lies within Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. It is also one of Kyuya Fukada's 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. Also called Rishiri-Fuji, this volcano makes up most of Rishiri Island. It became active about 200,000 years ago and had built most of its present cone by about 40,000 years ago. There are no recorded eruptions, and no signs of volcanic activity today. On the gravel near the summit, the Rishiri poppy, found only on this island, blooms from early July to early August.
