About Mount Rausu

Mount Rausu is a 1,660 m mountain near the boundary of Shari Town and Rausu Town, Hokkaido. It lies within Shiretoko National Park. It is also one of Kyuya Fukada's 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. A stratovolcano in the middle of the Shiretoko Peninsula, with a lava dome at the summit. In the last 2,300 years it was active in three periods: 2,200-2,300, 1,400-1,600 and 500-700 years ago. No fumes are seen today. The summit looks out over the peninsula rising between two seas, and snow lingers in the gullies until late July.
