About Mount Oakan
Mount Oakan is a 1,370 m mountain in Kushiro City, Hokkaido. It lies within Akan-Mashu National Park. This volcano rises east of Lake Akan. It is one of the volcanoes that grew inside the Akan caldera after the caldera formed. From about 5,000 years ago it poured out lava many times, and summit eruptions ended by about 1,000 years ago. Mixed forest covers the slopes to about 1,000 m, with Siberian dwarf pine on the ridge above. The summit overlooks the caldera and its lakes.
