About Mount Tokachi

Mount Tokachi is a 2,077 m mountain near the boundary of Biei Town, Shintoku Town and Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido. It lies within Daisetsuzan National Park. It is also one of Kyuya Fukada's 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. The active volcano at the heart of the Tokachi range, made up of many volcanic bodies; the summit itself is a lava dome. On the northwest side, the Taisho crater from the 1926 eruption and a crater from the 1962 eruption still steam heavily. The 1926 eruption caused a large mudflow, and the latest eruption was in 2004. Because snow lies for so long, eruptions here easily trigger snowmelt mudflows.
