Jozankei Daiichi Hotel Suizantei 定山渓温泉 定山渓第一寶亭留 翠山亭 定山溪第一寶亭留翠山亭
Jozankei Daiichi Hotel Suizantei is a traditional hot-spring ryokan perched on a hillside in Jozankei Onsen, south of Sapporo. Operated by the Daiichi Takimotokan Group, it is one of the brand’s flagship properties, built around the idea of offering a stay where “treasured moments remain in the heart.” Known for its refined hospitality, flavorful Japanese cuisine, and high-quality hot springs, the ryokan has undergone several renovations and is frequently highlighted as a “hot spring–focused” and “gourmet” retreat on major booking sites.
The ryokan offers around 50 guest rooms, split between two view types: “town-side,” overlooking the Jozankei Onsen district, and “mountain-side,” surrounded by greenery. Room categories range from Japanese, Western, and Japanese-Western styles—starting from spacious 45㎡ twin rooms up to premium suites of 120–160㎡. A defining feature is that nearly all rooms come with a private onsen bath, including some with hinoki-wood tubs, panoramic-view baths, or even private saunas. All rooms are non-smoking and equipped with humidifying air purifiers, complimentary bottled water, tea and coffee, and other comforts ideal for quiet, extended stays. Since April 2022, the property is limited to guests aged 7 and older, ensuring a calm and mature environment.
Suizantei owns three private spring sources drawn directly from the riverbed of the Toyohira River, each with distinct mineral compositions. The blended sodium-chloride spring water is delivered throughout the ryokan at an average natural temperature of around 69°C, adjusted as needed. The water is known as a warming “netsu-no-yu,” said to support relief from neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, chronic skin conditions, cold sensitivity, and fatigue recovery. Two large communal bath areas—alternating daily between men and women—feature jacuzzis, cold baths, open-air baths, and saunas. One bath highlights a 300-year-old katsura tree as its centerpiece, while the other offers multiple tubs in a spacious layout, allowing guests to enjoy both during their stay.
The property also features a secluded private bathhouse, “Morinoyu,” where guests can reserve both indoor and open-air baths surrounded by forest. The dimly lit indoor bath is intentionally simple, with no showers or amenities, evoking a nostalgic healing retreat designed purely for soaking. Additionally, a private sauna facility, “Suizan Neppa,” is available for exclusive use, equipped with a self-löyly sauna, cold bath, and an outdoor cooling deck facing Mt. Yuhidake. Both overnight guests and day visitors can reserve these facilities, making the ryokan popular among sauna enthusiasts.
Dining centers on handcrafted Japanese cuisine, offering seasonal multicourse meals that emphasize warmth, care, and the natural flavor of ingredients. Dinner is typically served as a kaiseki-style course, with variations depending on the chosen plan—featuring starters, sashimi, warm dishes, meat courses, rice, and dessert. Breakfast is a traditional Japanese set meal with freshly cooked rice, grilled fish, small side dishes, and soup. A selection of local sake, wine, and soft drinks can be ordered from the lounge or dining area.
Facilities include a lobby lounge, gift shop, and a post-bath relaxation lounge near the communal baths. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and complimentary parking and shuttle services support easy access. The ryokan also participates in the Daiichi Group’s “36-hour stay” program, which allows guests to use shared group facilities—including lounges, hot springs, and saunas at the nearby “Holiday Building”—before official check-in, depending on availability and dates (confirmation required).
Located at “Jozankei Onsen Nishi 3-105, Minami-ku, Sapporo,” the ryokan sits slightly elevated within the onsen district. It is about 1 hour by car from central Sapporo via Route 230, and 90–120 minutes from New Chitose Airport. A free, reservation-based shuttle from Sapporo makes it accessible even without a car. With its private in-room onsen baths, multiple communal baths, secluded forest bathhouse, and private saunas, Suizantei is one of Jozankei’s signature hot spring inns—ideal for guests seeking a mature, restful environment and a deeply immersive onsen experience.
