About Mount Yotei

Mount Yotei is a 1,898 m mountain near the boundary of Kyogoku Town, Kimobetsu Town and Makkari Village, Hokkaido. It lies within Shikotsu-Toya National Park. It is also one of Kyuya Fukada's 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. Also called Ezo-Fuji, this conical stratovolcano has a summit crater 700 m across. Lava from an eruption about 4,000 years ago reached part of what is now central Kutchan. The last eruption was about 2,500 years ago, and no fumes are seen today. From broadleaf forest at the foot to alpine flowers at the top, the mountain shows the change of vegetation with height, and the alpine zone on the summit and along the Kutchan trail is a Natural Monument.
