About Panketo Pond

The largest lake in the Sarobetsu Plain, a brackish lake about 8 km around, colored reddish by iron from the surrounding peat. Together with Penketo Pond it regularly supports more than 1% of the East Asian populations of taiga bean geese and tundra swans, and it was designated a Ramsar Site (Sarobetsu Plain) in 2005. It was an unmodified lake in the 1991 survey.
