About Penketo Pond

A lagoon-origin pond in the southern Sarobetsu Plain. The plain became a wetland after dunes cut it off from the sea starting about 4,000 years ago, and this pond formed in that process. Together with Panketo Pond it is an important breeding and stopover site for waterbirds, designated a Ramsar Site (Sarobetsu Plain) in 2005. It was an unmodified lake in the 1991 survey.
