About Lake Tofutsu

A brackish lake spanning Abashiri City and Koshimizu Town, called Topu (the lake's mouth) in the Ainu language. A long dune built by a sandspit separates it from the sea, with a narrow connection at its northwestern end. It is no more than 2.5 m deep, and more than 60,000 geese and ducks arrive every year. Koshimizu Natural Flower Garden lies on its north side. It was designated a Ramsar Site in 2005.
