Sapporo Beer Museum サッポロビール博物館
Opened in 1987 as Japan's only museum dedicated to beer, this museum traces the history of Sapporo Beer from its founding in 1876 to the present day, alongside the broader story of Japan's brewing industry. The history of beer production on display is intimately tied to the pioneering development of Hokkaido, offering a vivid sense of how the Meiji-era spirit of exploration shaped the birth of Japanese beer.
The museum is housed in a red brick building originally constructed in 1890 (Meiji 23) as a sugar refinery, designated as a Hokkaido Heritage site. The "Sapporo Gallery" presents brewing history across twelve thematic booths tracing the lineage from the Kaitakushi era onward, while the "Ad Collection" showcases a timeline of historic posters and advertisements. A major renovation in 2016 refreshed the exhibits, presenting more than 130 years of brewing history through engaging panels and video.
After the exhibits, the "Star Hall" offers paid tastings of "Fukusei Sapporo Seibakushu" — a recreation of the original Meiji-era Sapporo beer — alongside Sapporo Black Label draft. The adjacent Sapporo Beer Garden pairs traditional Genghis Khan lamb barbecue with Hokkaido beer, making this entire complex a beloved destination where history and flavor come together.
