Former Nagayama Takeshirō Residence / Former Mitsubishi Mining Dormitory 旧永山武四郎邸 / 旧三菱鉱業寮
A pair of historic buildings on a single site adjacent to the Sapporo Beer Museum, offering a rare opportunity to encounter two distinct eras of Hokkaido architecture side by side. The Former Nagayama Takeshiro Residence was built in the early 1880s by Nagayama Takeshiro, a key figure in Hokkaido's development who served as the second Governor of Hokkaido. A fine example of Japanese-Western architectural fusion favored by Hokkaido's upper class of that era, it is considered an important structure in the history of modern Japanese residential architecture.
In 1911 (Meiji 44), Mitsubishi Goshi Kaisha acquired the property for use as executive accommodation and a regional office. Around 1937, the "Former Mitsubishi Mining Dormitory" was added to the site — a Western-style structure with a striking contrast of white timber and green roof, featuring half-timbered gables and round windows. The juxtaposition of the Meiji-era Japanese-Western hybrid house with the Showa-era modernist building creates a condensed visual history of Hokkaido's architectural development.
In 1985, Mitsubishi Mining and Cement (now Mitsubishi Materials) donated the property to the City of Sapporo, and public access began in 1989. Following a 2018 renovation, the ground floor now houses "Rekishi no Heya" (History Room) with exhibits on Nagayama's legacy and the buildings' history, alongside "Nagayama Rest," a café in the spirit of the building's Japanese-Western heritage.
