Sunpiazza Aquarium 新さっぽろサンピアザ水族館
An aquarium located inside Sunpiazza shopping mall in the Shinsapporo district of Atsubetsu Ward, Sapporo. Since opening in 1982, it has been a beloved community aquarium deeply rooted in its local neighborhood. Its exhibits cover approximately 200 species and 10,000 creatures, including saltwater and freshwater fish, otters, spotted seals, and Magellanic penguins, with a particular focus on marine life native to Hokkaido's rivers and seas.
The aquarium offers a variety of highlights. Feeding sessions are held at the main circular tank, where fish of all sizes swim past. A touching pool where visitors can handle starfish and sea urchins is especially popular with children. Exhibits showcase familiar Hokkaido species such as atka mackerel and horsehair crab alongside exotic freshwater fish including piranhas from the Amazon and gymnarchus from the upper Nile, offering a rich glimpse into aquatic biodiversity from around the world.
Despite its compact scale, the aquarium is full of creative displays that make for an engaging visit. Its location inside a shopping mall makes it easy to stop in as part of a broader outing, and it remains a cherished destination for local families and a place where children can develop a love of nature.
