Sapporo TV Tower さっぽろテレビ塔
Standing at the eastern end of Odori Park in the heart of Sapporo, this 147.2-meter broadcasting tower was completed in 1956, with its observation deck opening the following year in 1957. Beloved by Sapporo residents for decades, it was officially designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2025, recognizing its value as a historic landmark.
From the observation deck at 90.38 meters above ground, visitors enjoy a sweeping view of Sapporo's grid-patterned cityscape centered on Odori Park. On clear days, the view extends across the Ishikari Plain to the Sea of Japan, with Mt. Moiwa and Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium visible to the south and Hokkaido University to the north. A dramatic floor-to-ceiling glass window known as the "Scary Window" offers a thrilling bird's-eye experience straight down to the streets below.
The electric clock mounted midway up the tower is a rarity among towers in Japan, echoing the city's tradition of public timekeeping alongside the famous Clock Tower. At night, the tower is beautifully illuminated, forming one of the most iconic scenes of Sapporo's nightscape, which has been recognized as one of Japan's New Top Three Night Views.
