Sapporo Kokusai Ski Area 札幌国際スキー場

A ski resort located near the Sapporo-Otaru city boundary at 1,100 meters elevation, approximately 60 minutes by car from central Sapporo — accessible yet home to some of Hokkaido's finest powder snow. Its high altitude and low temperatures produce snow that is even drier and lighter than at other ski areas in the city. The resort typically opens in mid-November — earlier than any other ski area in Japan — reaches peak snow depths of nearly 4 meters, and remains skiable well into May.

An 8-person gondola, the "Sky Cabin 8," carries visitors directly to the summit, where panoramic views sweep over the Sea of Japan toward Otaru and across the Ishikari Plain. Seven courses range from gentle family runs to the Downhill Course with a maximum gradient of 30 degrees, with the longest run stretching 3,600 meters. For those who don't ski, a "Snow Play Area" offers snow rafting, snow racers, and other winter activities.

With an on-site resort hotel, guests can enjoy an immersive snow holiday without leaving the mountain. Day-trip bus tours from central Sapporo are widely available. The resort is a popular destination among skiers and snowboarders from across Japan and overseas seeking an authentic Hokkaido powder snow experience.
