Sapporo Art Park 札幌芸術の森

A comprehensive arts complex spread across approximately 40 hectares of rich forest in Minami Ward, Sapporo, comprising an indoor art museum, an outdoor sculpture museum, craft studios, and an artist-in-residence program. Established in 1986, it was built around the forward-thinking concept of providing artists with an integrated place to create, exhibit, and live.

The 7.5-hectare outdoor sculpture museum is perhaps the most celebrated part of the complex. Seventy-four sculptures by 64 artists from Japan and abroad are scattered through the forest, encountered in dialogue with the changing natural environment through every season. Many works were created specifically for this site. Among the must-see pieces are Dani Karavan's "The Way to the Hidden Garden" — an immersive environmental work stretching 300 meters — and five pieces by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, which can be seen nowhere outside Oslo except here. From January to March, a special "Geimorikanjiki Walk" event invites visitors to explore the snow-covered sculptures on traditional snowshoes.

The indoor museum hosts varied contemporary art exhibitions, and hands-on craft workshops are available in the studio facilities. The complex is accessible by bus from Makomanai Station on the Sapporo Subway Namboku Line.
