Hoheikyo Gorge 豊平峡
A gorge located approximately 12 kilometers up the Toyohira River from Jozankei, where the Hoheikyo Dam and its reservoir create a spectacular natural landscape. Completed in 1972, the 102.5-meter-high concrete arch dam commands the scene with an imposing presence, and the combined vista of dam and surrounding mountains is both grand and humbling. Hoheikyo has been selected as one of Japan's "Top 100 Dam Lakes" and one of the "Top 100 Water Source Forests."
The appeal of Hoheikyo varies dramatically by season. In summer, the deep green mountains frame the dam in a refreshing alpine panorama. In autumn — typically peaking in early to mid-October — it transforms into one of Hokkaido's premier fall foliage destinations, drawing visitors from across Japan to witness colors reflected in the reservoir. To protect the environment, private vehicles are not permitted beyond a certain point; visitors board an electric bus to reach the dam site, noted as Japan's first passenger electric bus for tourism purposes.
From the dam site, sightseeing boats offer tours of the reservoir in summer, and the views from the dam top are extraordinary. The nearby Hoheikyo Onsen hot spring completes the experience — this is a beloved destination for combining breathtaking scenery with a relaxing soak.
