Historical Village of Hokkaido 北海道開拓の村
An open-air museum within Nopporo Forest Park in Atsubetsu Ward, Sapporo, that opened in 1983. Historic buildings from Hokkaido dating from the Meiji through early Showa periods have been relocated and reconstructed here, with 52 buildings spread across approximately 54 hectares. The buildings are organized into four zones — farm village, fishing village, mountain village, and townscape — each recreating a different facet of pioneer-era Hokkaido. Among them is the former Kaitakushi Industrial Bureau Building, constructed in 1877 and designated a National Important Cultural Property.
Building interiors are open to visitors, with exhibits of everyday items and period tools that bring the lives and ingenuity of the pioneers vividly to life. Horse-drawn carriages operate through the village in summer, while horse-drawn sleds carry visitors through the snowy landscape in winter, offering a different seasonal experience with each visit. The cluster of historic buildings standing amid winter's white silence evokes powerful scenes from Hokkaido's past.
A visit paired with the adjacent Hokkaido Museum allows for a comprehensive journey through Hokkaido's natural history and the history of its development. There is no other facility quite like it for experiencing Hokkaido's rich historical heritage as a living, walkable space.
